SRS Medical Acquires Asbrook/Eris and Andco Tek Assets, Latest Acquisition
in Incontinence and Women’s Health
Billerica, Massachusetts – January 13, 2003
SRS Medical Systems, Inc. today announced that it had acquired substantially
all of the assets of Asbrook, Inc. and Andco Tek, Inc., both of Ventura
CA. These firms presently market urodynamics products under the Asbrook/Eris
brand, primarily in the areas of urogynecology and gynecology.
This is the second significant acquisition by SRS Medical in the area
of incontinence and women’s health. SRS Medical acquired the In-Flow™
device from American Medical Systems, Inc. (AMS) of Minnetonka MN (NASDAQ:
AMMD) in November 2000 and recently announced that they had received
CE certification for this advanced device. (Not for sale in the U.S.)
Urodynamic products are used to evaluate urinary tract function and
provide the medical justification for most therapeutic interventions
related to urinary incontinence and other voiding disorders. Asbrook/Eris
products feature a number of unique technologies, including an automatic
leak point detector and a non-pulsating pump, both of which can be used
with most urodynamic systems in the field.
Many analysts believe that the market for urodynamics is poised for
rapid growth, due to an increasing recognition of the value of establishing
a diagnostic basis for treatments, as well as increases in the rate
of reimbursement. At a time when rates for most procedures are being
cut, CMS/Medicare recently announced increased reimbursement averaging
40% for urodynamics.
Donald R. Ostergard, M.D., President of both Asbrook, Inc. and Andco
Tek, Inc., states “We are very pleased to be a part of SRS Medical
and are looking forward to a long and productive association as our
innovative technologies are integrated into the unique SRS Medical product
suite for the evaluation and therapy of urinary incontinence. As a physician
specializing in women’s health, it is clear that SRS Medical’s
modern approach to this problem will significantly improve the quality-of-life
of the 10-30% of ambulatory women and the 50% of women in nursing homes
who suffer from urinary incontinence. As more physicians recognize the
clinical value of urodynamics as a diagnostic modality and with the
‘user friendly’ Asbrook/Eris approach, a clear clinical
contribution is expected and women’s health will benefit.”
Kevin M. Connolly, President and CEO of SRS Medical, states “The
Asbrook/Eris diagnostic devices complement SRS Medical’s innovative
therapeutic devices and round out our product portfolio for incontinence.
In addition to their clinically well-conceived technologies, we are
pleased to welcome the Asbrook/Eris team, which is one of the most knowledgeable
and dedicated groups in the urodynamics field.”
