The Aware is a pelvic floor stimulator for use in treating urge, stress and mixed urinary incontinence (UI).
Electrical stimulation is used to retrain and strengthen weak pelvic muscles and improve bladder control. Numerous studies indicate that pelvic floor stimulation has a success rate of 60-80% in treating or improving UI and typically no significant side effects.
Stimulation works by eliciting a combination effect of sensation and muscle contraction that helps improve muscle strength and re-learn natural reflexes. Depending upon the type of UI, different electrical parameters are used, since each type has its own effector mechanisms. Urge UI is treated with short-term, maximal stimulation; stress UI is typically treated with longer-term stimulation of lower intensity. The Aware PFS features pre-set control settings for urge, stress and mixed UI, as well as the ability to completely change and save all settings.
The Aware PFS has built-in safety features to ensure patient protection at all times:
Safety Lock: Once the desired stimulation intensity (amplitude) has been reached, the instrument will automatically lock so that there can be no inadvertent change. To “unlock” the intensity, simply press on the up or down arrow, and reset as appropriate.
Alarm: If the electrode is not making a good muscle contact, an “Electrode Alarm” will be displayed.
